Copy Editor // The Ringer


The Ringer is seeking a full-time night copy editor. The copy editor will be responsible for performing multiple deep copy edits on a nightly basis, coordinating copy flow with editors and fact checkers, and helping to implement nightly and advance production of written pieces, social content, and multimedia text that cover topics in sports, popular culture, national affairs, and more. The successful candidate will be able to go beyond a surface level of editing, and will have experience in vetting stories with an eye toward taste, legal issues, elegant sentence construction, and journalistic values. The hours are 1-10 p.m. PT/4 p.m.–1 a.m. ET, Sunday through Thursday; during NFL season, the Sunday hours are typically later. This job is in a bargaining unit represented by the Writer's Guild of America, East.

What You'll Do

  • Copyedit multiple dot-com files on a nightly basis, ranging from long-form features to columns and essays to news-based blog posts

  • Use the content management system Chorus to build and publish files for TheRinger.com, and also to help handle the homepage

  • Edit social media copy, podcast descriptions and titles, and video decks and titles at a rapid-fire pace

  • Stay in constant communication with fellow copy editors, fact checkers, story editors, designers, and other collaborators throughout the production cycle

Who You Are

  • Minimum of 3+ years experience as a copy editor for a daily publication

  • Extensive knowledge of Chicago and AP styles

  • Proven ability to edit for structure, taste, grammar, punctuation, and style under deadline pressure

  • Proficiency working with multiple editors in a continuous deadline environment

  • Familiarity with content-management systems

  • Sports-editing experience or a high level of comfort reading about sports; editors also should be comfortable vetting pop culture copy

  • The versatility to both quickly edit a news-oriented post and deeply edit a reported feature

  • Familiarity with and passion for The Ringer’s content
