Staff Writer/Copyeditor

As the Staff Writer/Copyeditor you will help tell APS’s story to a variety of audiences through written communications about programs, initiatives, events, and other developments of interest to the physics community. The position also edits copy produced by others that flows through the communications department. The APS has a “remote first” concept that promotes equal treatment and equal access, independent of physical work location, with a majority of staff working primarily from remote work locations. This position could require at times in office work, various geographic events and meeting attendance as instructed by your Supervisor. A Typical Week May Look Like This:

  • Conceives and writes content for all APS communication channels, including emails, websites, newsletters, reports, and social media.

  • Interacts with other APS departments, elected leadership, APS members, and individuals from the broader scientific community to keep abreast of news and obtain background information

  • Edits content for style, tone, length, and clarity.

  • Provides writing and editing support for special projects as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Is This You: Education: Bachelor's degree in journalism or a science field. Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience writing and editing non-technical content for a scientific institution

  • Superlative written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Chicago Style

  • Ability to meet deadlines consistently

  • Ability to synthesize information from diverse sources

  • Ability to conduct interviews in person, by email, and by telephone and video conference

  • Ability to write and edit in MS Word and Google Docs

  • Ability to take photographs desirable

  • Ability to conduct photo/graphics research for visual and multimedia material desirable

  • Strong organization, documentation, and prioritization skills.

  • Exceptional attention to detail.

  • Ability to adapt to quickly changing schedules.

  • Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.

Travel: Position may require occasional overnight business travel to attend meetings and events as directed by the supervisor.
